Egyptian Muslims on trial for blasphemy
The prosecution in Cairo has pressed charges of blasphemy against two Islamists. According to the state news agency Mena, the trial will start on Sunday. The Islamist Abu Islam Ahmed Abdullah is accused of burning a bible two weeks ago during protests against the US embassy, while his son is charged with fomenting religious hatred. There is hope for Egyptian justice, the conservative daily Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung comments: "Granted, this justice is anything but secular. At least, however, the Egyptian judiciary is no longer putting one religion above another. ... Egyptian society is deeply religious, that goes for both Muslims and Christians. Now for the first time, the new constitution is to contain a passage that, in addition to citing Islamic law as the major source for legislation, also states that confessional laws on personal status should hold for Christians and Jews. That's a far cry from the secular order of the West. Nevertheless it is a hopeful sign that in future Egyptian Christians won't be treated worse than Muslims."

Mursi driving Iran into isolation
With his criticism Egyptian President Mohammed Mursi has prevented the Iranian leadership from using his presence at the summit for propaganda purposes, the conservative daily Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung comments with relief, hoping this will prompt action on Syria: "The suspicion that an Egypt led by the Muslim Brothers is seeking an alliance with Shiite Iran has been put to rest. … Mursi is not trying to bring the Sunnis and Shiites closer together but pushing for Iran's isolation. Moreover the reborn regional leader Egypt is driving Iran out of the Arab world once more. … Mursi's drumbeat in Tehran won't pass without consequences. His initiative and Iran's expected reaction have shown that a political solution aimed at resolving the conflict in Syria with Iran's help is not possible. Mursi's proposal to form a working group consisting of Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Iran and Turkey … is likely the last attempt to find a political solution to the civil war. If Iran doesn't grasp this very quickly … other solutions will be sought in which Iran will have no say."

Mursi makes room for democracy
The disempowerment of Egypt's top military commanders by the new President Mohammed Mursi is an important step toward democracy, although the new political appointments also include military and religious figures, writes the conservative Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung: "Mursi is taking very seriously his plan to radically change the order that emerged after the military putsch in 1952. The republic over which generals Nasser, Sadat and Mubarak ruled as presidents was firmly founded upon the military, the judiciary and the Islamic al-Azhar University. … All three institutions are now to maintain a distance from politics. The separation could give the new and still unstable democracy room to develop. However the demarcation lines are not clear. The new defence minister is also a general, Mursi named a well established secular judge concerned for the independence of the judiciary as vice-president, while the head of al-Azhar University was named minister for religious affairs."

The rejuvenation of the Athens & Epidaurus Festival
Athens' summer theatre festival has witnessed the reinvention of old factories as cultural venues. Entrance prices have gone down from 100 euros to 15 euros, and are attracting younger audiences. Rainer Hermann is thrilled by this revival of the Athens & Epidaurus Festival. "This revival of the festival has a name: Yorgos Loukos. Athens-born Loukos has lived in France for 37 years and is currently artistic director of the ballet troupe at the Lyon opera house. The 51st year of the festival has brought him back to his birthplace – as its director… The Athens cultural summer festival proves that Greece is breaking away from its marginalised status – at least from a cultural point of view. The 2004 Olympic Games gave the impetus for this phenomenon. Loukos has repeatedly been offered the direction of the festival, but he always refused. Then suddenly he started to see Athens from a different perspective, and now he believes in its potential. His takes his greatest pleasure from watching young people sitting in a bar and asking each other whether they have been to see Sasha Waltz… 'They don't have much money, but those 15 euros change their lives.'"
