Polish cinema loses the secret of its appeal
In conversation with Iranian philosopher Ramin Jahanbegloo, Polish film director Andrzej Wajda suggests there is decreasing interest in Polish cinema abroad. "Today, Polish cinema has very little opportunity to be shown outside Poland. Its appeal used to be based on the Berlin Wall. Everyone wanted to know what was behind that wall. Stalin, and then the Soviet Union, engendered fear with the Cold War. And everyone wanted to know if the people behind the Iron Curtain really wanted this War. Since the wall came down, there is no more secret. We have become one of many countries - in Europe, too - trying to build an indigenous cinema arts."

Ramin Jahanbegloo on integrating Islam into European diversity
Iranian philosopher Ramin Jahanbegloo considers Spain "the only European country where we can have an authentic debate on cultural understanding and a dialogue between believers. ... Islam has certainly been, a source of tension for Spain throughout its history, but more important is the hybrid made by the Muslim religion and Catholicism, which constitutes one of the most laudable aspects of Spanish culture. Islam forms an essential part of the history of Spain, and as a result of Europe. ... The Spanish exception implies that Europe cannot vigorously reject Islam. If Islam isn't integrated into European diversity, it won't be possible to overcome Islamic fundamentalism, nor to unmask and defeat nationalist hatred."

Ramin Jahanbegloo and the 'clash of knowledge gaps'
In an article in the Spanish edition of the American magazine, Foreign Policy, the Iranian philosopher Ramin Jahanbegloo talks about the 'clash of knowledge gaps' between Western societies and the Muslim world. "We need to move beyond the predetermined binary opposition according to which 'the rest of the world' has nothing to teach the West. If Western civilisation begins to act like the Taliban, while forgetting that it is comprised of a diversity of viewpoints and cultures, it will be condemned to betray its own liberal roots and democratic objectives. Nonetheless, it is possible to coexist in an increasingly intolerant world. ... Each culture nourishes and develops a facet of human dignity and progress will always stem from dialogue between them. If the West demands that Islam eradicate its intolerances, it is obliged to do the same."
