La Guerra de los Cinco Días entre Georgia y Rusia ha reducido considerablemente las posibilidades de ingreso a la OTAN para la república del Cáucaso, escribe el periódico conservador Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung: "Las posibilidades de Georgia de integración en la OTAN tampoco eran muy grandes antes de la guerra, pues los conflictos territoriales y étnicos con Osetia del Sur y Abjasia no habían sido solucionados. ... Si pretenden escaparse de la influencia de Rusia de manera permanente ingresando a la OTAN, los Gobiernos de Tbilisi podrían verse ante la elección de abandonar también formalmente las provincias de Osetia del Sur y Abjasia. Ninguna fuerza política en Georgia parece preparada para ello. ... Por ahora, ninguno de los dos lados que se están acusando de agresiones armadas tiene interés en un nuevo enfrentamiento bélico. Sin embargo, a algún que otro actor podría serle útil que el permanente miedo a la guerra oculte las dificultades en materia de política interna."

Will Poland stick to its veto? The EU-Russian summit

In the paper's leading article Michael Ludwig says Poland should not just be regarded as a troublemaker in the negotiations with Russia. He argues that in view of the recent disputes regarding energy supplies, Warsaw is right to oppose Moscow's power-grabbing strategies. "The leadership in Warsaw wants to play a bigger role in shaping the EU's policies towards Russia, and is entitled to do so. Moreover, the experiences of Poland and other central eastern European countries with their powerful and intimidating neighbour remains useful. On the other hand, since the current Polish government took power, it has repeatedly missed the opportunity to take advantage of possibilities for cooperation. This was owing firstly to its preoccupation with removing unwanted functionaries from the Polish foreign ministry and secondly to the alienating tactics of the national conservatives regarding Germany and Western Europe. However, this is no reason for the EU not to show solidarity with Poland. On the contrary, a demonstration of solidarity would strengthen the EU's internal cohesion."
