Islamism complements right-wing extremism

First the shootings in Toulouse were suspected of being the work of right-wing extremists, now it appears to have been an Islamist attacker. These two extremes actually have a lot in common, notes the liberal daily La Stampa: "A mad devotee of Allah has now climbed out of the abyss in Toulouse. Not a right-wing extremist paratrooper who is protecting the brown spectre of French history, but a soldier of the daily Intifada that rages in the suburbs. How can it be that in the search for an explanation to the two massacres two such disparate if not opposing worlds were weighed up as potential culprits? Both are equally plausible. The Islamist terrorist and the neo-Nazi both belong to our society's underground. Two fundamentally different nightmares that peacefully coexist without coming into contact with each other. And when they do, they actually bolster each other. They are two mutually complementary nightmares."

Tratar correctamente a una sociedad multiétnica

El periódico liberal La Stampa comenta la afirmación del primer ministro italiano Silvio Berlusconi de que Italia sería una sociedad multiétnica: "El verdadero punto no es una batalla por las palabras –multiétnico sí, multiétnico no– sino por cómo se gobierna este proceso. ¿Con vagones de metro separados para los habitantes de Milán? ¿Con las proclamaciones de no contrarrestar la presión bíblica que baña las costas del Mediterráneo desde el corazón de África? Todos sabemos lo difícil que resulta la convivencia, y qué justificable resulta en los ámbitos populares el sentido de injusticia que se siente frente a la impunidad de las bandas 'étnicas' que rivalizan con las italianas por la conquista del territorio del que el Estado retrocede. No ocurre sólo en Italia. En Francia, el Ministerio del Interior ha censado unos cincuenta barrios de los suburbios que se consideran 'perdu', perdidos, por la República. Se trata de encontrar el camino adecuado para gobernar una sociedad multiétnica y no jugar con las palabras por una banal razón electoral."

When she promises order and security, her suit makes the rest and contrasts with the sombre grey tones of the Parisian political class. ... But Segolene is not a softhearted person. ... One would say there is something perverse - more masochistic than sadomasochistic - in this French political love affair. And there is a hint of fetishism in a photo (published a few days ago by the daily, Liberation) focusing on Madame's feet: Segolene has become an object of desire."
