UBS attemps to right itself after the American credit crisis
On April 1st, Swiss bank UBS announced a new round of capital financing. Suffering from an abysmal devaluation of more that 23 billion euros, the bank has been hit harder by the American credit crisis than any other international establishment. "Marcel Ospel [the president] has quit UBS. This was the only good news during the entire dark day yesterday," writes Pierre Ruetschi. "The crisis isn't over. Evaluation of the damage to investors, even to savings clients, as well as the estimation of losses for the state and the cantons hasn't even begun. In this highly volatile context, [Finance minister] Hans-Rudolf Merz's comments are astonishing. On the radio, he thanked Marcel Ospel for his good work curbing the impropriety yet, at this newspaper, his optimism for the future is more irritating than reassuring."

Europe rules against Microsoft
"The decision will go down in history", considers Pierre Ruetschi in his editorial. "But the battle has only just begun. For, in the shadow of Microsoft, another giant has been born that is even more awesome in the long run: Google, which, from a simple search engine has turned into an Internet hydra. Google has founded a new empire by combining three elements: its search engine (the tool), traffic (the client) generated by free services and advertising (revenue). The result: such a phenomenal success that it poses a threat to Microsoft. How much time will it take a court to deal with the question of the monopoly of knowledge? Even Google does not have that information."

Even when on holiday, Nicolas Sarkozy manages to draw attention to himself
Holidaying in the United States, the French president, Nicolas Sarkozy, attacked two paparazzi photographers on August 5th. "What ever possessed Nicolas Sarkozy to jump aboard a boat of photographers and arraign them vehemently for daring to photograph him swimming around a lake in New Hampshire? His behaviour belongs more to Rambo than to a president. ... The French appear to be seduced by politically incorrect methods that defy all expectations. Spending his holidays in the land of McDonalds, accosting a boat full of reporters and soon to shake George Bush's hand. Sarkozy is a sort of new wave rebel who is finally getting the United States to take notice of France."
