Volker Schlöndorff talks about his Solidarnosc film
The closing day of the Gdansk Film Festival Gwiazd on July 5 saw the premiere of Volker Schlöndorff's new film "The Forgotten Heroine" about the early days of the Polish trade union Solidarnosc. Talking to Jan Boncza-Szablowski the German director explains why he made the film: "To set the record straight and serve the cause of justice. I see this as my duty. It's important to remember that West Germany and the GDR adopted a critical stance towards Solidarnosc when it was first created. When Wojciech Jaruzelski imposed martial law, Helmut Schmidt, German Chancellor at the time, didn't even protest, and Erich Honecker even offered Jaruzelski his official support. I was ashamed."

Volker Schlöndorff and European cinema
The German film director Volker Schlöndorff, in an interview led by Quico Alsedo that coincides with the release in Spain of his latest film, 'The Ninth Day', shares his view that there is no such thing as European cinema. "It doesn't really exist, given how it has been continually losing ground since the 1970s: 90% of films are controlled by large corporations, that is to say, by the United States, and 10% by the domestic industry, which does not have any European features."
