The Palme d'Or and the school crisis
Journalist Véronique Soulé was delighted to see the Palme d'Or go to France's "Entre les murs" (The Class) and describes the tensions within the French school system: "In the midst of a school crisis this film tells the story of a secondary school class and the difficulties and challenges of teaching pupils with 'diverse' backgrounds. This award should give disheartened teachers new courage. ... The Minister of Education Xavier Darcos praised the film yesterday, saying it paid 'tribute' to teachers, who often pursue their careers under difficult conditions. In an ironic twist of fate he then met up with trade unions to discuss a controversial law that would stipulate a minimum number of working hours for teachers in elementary schools. ... Researcher [Philippe Meirieu] estimates that this film will influence teachers' attitudes because 'it shows that this profession also enables people to become involved in promoting social cohesion'. This kind of discourse will not find favour with defenders of the thesis that schools should confine themselves to being institutions for imparting knowledge."

Sophie Duchesne considers that French and European identities are compatible
In an interview conducted by Véronique Soulé, Sophie Duchesne, a researcher for the CNRS (national centre of scientific research), considers that European identity is an extension of national identity. "Europe is particularly difficult for the French to accept because it implies a common policy built on the acknowledgment of different values and interests, beginning with national differences and including a different concept of political power. But this doesn't mean that I believe in an antagonism between French identity and European identity. On the contrary, identification with the nation opens the way to identification with Europe: the European Union is a remote political community, we aren't very likely to understand it, to feel that we are a part of it, if we haven't already experienced national political community, if we don't feel that we are citizens of our own country."
