A dizzying year for Nicolas Sarkozy

The paper's Paris correspondent Lluís Uría sums up developments a year after the elections that brought Nicolas Sarkozy to power: "Dizzying is the best adjective to describe Sarkozy's first year in the Elysée. He went at implementing his reform package at a vertiginous, almost frenetic pace. Equally dizzying - and radical - was how he changed his style of governing and of exercising power, and in doing so of making a public show of his private life. Finally, the speed with which he squandered the enormous trust his countrymen has placed in him ... was also just as dizzying. ... Even supporters in his own ranks criticise the roughly 50 reform laws passed so far for lacking the coherence and structure which would make them understandable and enforceable."

France's ruling party's candidates are ashamed of their president

"[The French president] Nicolas Sarkozy has practically become a leper in the election campaign [For the municipal elections on March 9th and 16]. The candidates of his party, the UMP, [Union for a Popular Movement], avoid being associated with the image of the president as much as possible, and when they seek the support of an important figure of the party they turn to the prime minister, François Fillon", explains Lluís Uría, Paris correspondent for the daily. "When a Socialist candidate unearths photos of his UMP rival in the company of Nicolas Sarkozy to denigrate him - as has been seen in certain municipalities - something is very wrong. Numerous mayoral candidates are even hiding their party's logo ... . Among them is Laurent Wauquiez, candidate in Puy-en-Velay, in the Haute-Loire department. Not a single reference has been made to the UMP in his campaign blog. This would be an anecdotal detail if Wauquiez weren't the government's spokesman."

Europe's place in French political debate

"Europe has practically disappeared from the agenda during the French electoral campaign", writes Lluis Uria, the daily's Paris correspondent. "For a country that dealt the final blow to the European Constitution, this is rather surprising. As France is on the point of electing a new President of the Republic and starting a new political era, the European question, which divided the country two years ago, is strangely absent from electoral debate. ... According to a CSA [French polling institute] survey carried out for the 50th anniversary of the EU, the French say they are proud to be European (71%) but are wary of a liberal Europe in the making as well as the globalisation upon which they blame all the economic ills that France is suffering. ... And instead of trying to convince citizens of the advantages of the European project, French political leaders regularly fuel suspicion towards Brussels."
