Poland in a state of upheaval

Reinhold Vetter complains that the Polish government led by Lech and Jaroslaw Kaczynski is using the debate on the country's communist past as an instrument for party politics: "Taking its schematic assessment of the past as a starting point, the national conservative government is busily engaged in the 'cleansing' of the state apparatus, of the country's higher legal organs, the media, the education sector and the management committees of major state-owned companies. The main criteria for somebody's removal from his or her position is evidence, or at least the suspicion, that the person in question made a career in politics or some other profession under socialist rule and still maintains contact with post-communist social democracy. The government fills the vacant posts with its own party functionaries and sympathisers; professional qualification for the job is not taken into account. This 'cleansing' goes far beyond the uncovering of corrupt structures and criminal connections between the economy and politicians. It's turning out to be a politically-motivated grab for power affecting important sections of society."

Portrait of Adam Michnik

Adam Michnik, one of Poland's most important intellectuals, a former civil rights activist and editor-in-chief of the "Gazeta Wyborcza", is seeking a new role, writes Reinhold Vetter in his critical portrait of Michnik. "Many of the things Michnik had pushed for over the past few years have not come about. One of them is a historical compromise between a reformed, post-communist left and the leftist liberal successors of the old opposition, which could have formed the foundation for a new social democracy. However, this doesn't detract from the historical role he played as one of the most important champions of today's Poland. His retirement from today's editorial business and the fact that he abstained from the recent failed attempts to found a new political party staged by what was formerly the oppositional intelligentsia are an indication that Michnik has decided to focus on what he does best, namely taking sides as a pugnacious historical-political journalist who has now ascribed himself to just one – important – movement in Polish public life, but no longer represents Poland's public welfare as such."
