Heavy rioting in Budapest

The celebrations commemorating the 50th anniversary of the Hungarian Revolution of 1956 were overshadowed by heavy rioting in Budapest. Tibor Kis comments: "In view of the riots it's a pleasant surprise that the rest of Europe was able to celebrate this important date in high spirits. It's ironic that Hungary, the main protagonist, didn't make much of a contribution... On this chaotic anniversary, marred by pessimism and violence, the world formulated the principles underlying the spirit of 1956 and which dictate what we Hungarians really are: part of an increasingly united Europe, a democratic state based on the rule of law. Following yesterday's events we should perhaps try to keep this in mind."
