The Cypriot conundrum

Turkish author and media expert Haluk Sahin explains in an interview with Jürgen Gottschlich why the Turks are unwilling to reach a compromise with the EU in the Cyprus debate. "Virtually everyone in Turkey, whether conservative or leftist, secular or religious, holds the view that Turkey, and in particular the Turkish Cypriots, made their contribution towards finding a political solution to the problem of divided Cyprus in spring 2004 when they supported the UN's plan to reunite the island on the basis of two autonomous cantons. The fact that despite all their fears two-thirds of the Turkish Cypriots voted in favour of this plan, which entailed the resettlement of hundreds of thousands of Turkish Cypriots, was a political miracle... The upshot of this entire political operation was that the Greeks, who were unwilling to accept reconciliation and voted against the plan, were rewarded, while the Turks continued to be punished. The Greek Cypriots became EU members while the Turkish Cypriots were left out in the cold and continue to be boycotted by the EU."
