Europe is losing too much ground in Africa
José Antonio Teixeira salutes the statements of the Portuguese Prime Minister José Sócrates who insisted in a brief speech on the need to reinforce relations between Europe and Africa. "Usually, the appeal for Africa appears like a nice declaration, decorating an important speech. However, Europe and the world should try to understand what is going on in this continent. China is discovering a privileged market there. The great factory of the world is thirsting for energy and looking for new markets. Portugal will hold EU presidency for the second half of 2007 and Socrates hopes to then be able to organise a summit in order to create a closer relationship between the two continents ... . The historical complexes of the European colonisers have brought on the imperial desire of china. It will be difficult for Europe, also hungry for energy, to reverse the tendency and propose to Africa a co-operation on far more civilised basis."
