Zafer Senocak on Postmodernism in Turkey
German-Turkish writer Zafer Senocak examines Ottoman-Turkish intellectual history and concludes that neither the antique roots of western culture nor modernity play a great role. Rather, the path leads directly from Islamic mysticism to Postmodernism. "Postmodernism as philosophical bridge does not replace modernity. It only highlights its breaks and its contradictions. It is an after-effect of pain and tension; it is the memory of pain itself. It is an illusion to believe that in light of their arbitrariness and in the shadow of their ambiguity, one could surmount or leap over the questions posed by modernity. And so Turkey in its current form seems like a prefabricated house, that's been erected on historically saturated territory."
