The outrageous consumerism of the Portuguese
In this festive season, Antonio José Texeira, chief editor of the daily, notes that consumerism is thriving in Portugal. "The Portuguese have never been such spenders, no doubt to forget the austerity of government politics. ... Credit cards have been hard at work. Almost one thousand euros have exchanged every second, which goes to show the consumerist voracity of our times. ... A phenomenon that lends itself to all sorts of moralism, either because we are a poor country that would like to be rich, or because of record debt that we continue to feed, or else because of wanting to transform every festive day into a hymn in praise of consumerism. ... The 31st of December is coming up and, in this country without social justice and constantly in debt, nothing could be better than taking off to Brazil to forget suffocating government politics. The flights are already booked-up... ".
