The film critic as a seismograph
One day before the Berlin International Film Festival begins, Hanns-Georg Rodek takes a stance in the debate currently raging in Germany about the role of the film critic. "The ideal film critic is not writing on commission and will freely admit that there are no objective criteria for his activities. Every critic has his own personal canon, and the trust of his readers is based on the fact that over time the reader learns to recognise that canon - and compares it with his own. The critic's raison d'être is his function as a seismograph, which is based on the experience of watching thousands of films, an insatiable curiosity about new trends and artists - and a weakness for the weak… Film criticism is not a weapon of destruction; at its most positive it opens the way for works that deserve to be watched."
