A year after the cartoon controversy

A year ago controversy flared up around Muhammad cartoons that had been published by the Danish daily Jyllands-Posten the previous September. Tøger Seidenfaden notes that the resulting national crisis also had a positive effect. He points to a study according to which Danish Muslims feel less discriminated against now than they did a year ago. "Despite the polarisation, many people became curious and wanted to find out more about their Muslim fellow citizens. And what can counter prejudice more effectively than curiosity, contact and dialogue? It's also understandable that the majority of Danes now distance themselves from the violent reactions to the cartoons in certain parts of the Muslim world. ... Most Danes are not hostile to foreigners. When immigrants and refugees see that only a fraction of society gives them the cold shoulder and that this fraction is becoming smaller and smaller, it's the best news there has been for a long time in this country as far as integration is concerned."
