The Virtual Gulag Museum

Karl Grobe reviews the virtual Gulag Museum. Set up by the organisation "Memorial", it documents evidence of the Soviet apparatus of repression, with which Russian society is still trying to come to terms. "Initially, all the virtual Gulag Museum can do is to keep the memories alive. The task of helping people come to terms with history is one which an independent organisation can't fulfil. 'We need', Memorial explains, 'the support of society and naturally of the state, too. Much to our regret, this support has not been forthcoming until now'. Therefore, the plans to discover the names of all the victims of the repression have remained unfinished. Access to the archives has not been given. Russia's Interior Ministry and the successors of the perpetrator organisation, the KGB, have joined forces to impede this again."
