Bronislaw Geremek and Carlos Carnero want Europeans to be consulted
Two Members of the European Parliament Bronislaw Geremek (Poland) and Carlos Carnero (Spain) have co-signed an article in which they defend the idea of a European-wide vote on the Constitution. "How can we reconcile the fact that 18 countries have ratified the treaty, 2 have rejected it and 7 still have doubts about what to do? Given the situation, we think that all European citizens should be given a voice, and not only those who have been able to express themselves by referendum. In line with this point of view, we propose the organisation of a simultaneous vote in all countries of the EU. This kind of consultation would not replace the ratification proces but would constitute a contribution to to as it would provide crucial information to the governing bodies of the EU which must take the decisions: a clearer picture of the aspirations and will of the citizens. This vote would only be consultative but its results would offer a very important political direction. In this way, even the countries who are not used to organising this kind of vote or who do not have the necessary legal framework for a consultative vote, would be able to participate."
