European foreign stations in Arabic

"The Arab-speaking world is like a paradise for news channels," notes Peter Sturm in view of the inauguration of German broadcaster Deutsche Welle's Arabic programme. "The major foreign stations are currently engaged in a race to win the allegiance of Arab audiences. On the very same day Deutsche Welle begins its programme for the Arab-speaking world, France 24 will do the same, although this is supposed to be just a coincidence. The Americans have already been on the market for a few years with their channel 'Al Hurra', and according to Deutsche Welle they've been more successful than Arab governments will care to admit. This autumn their greatest rival, the BBC, is expected to make its grand market entrance... And although they all stress they don't want to preach or convert, the subliminal message is that the Arab states can only benefit when a foreign station innocently explains how politics works in Europe. Viruses quickly develop a life of their own, and this also goes for the virus of democracy."
