What should the EU do about Iran ?
Jürgen Gottschlich sees two possible scenarios in the British-Iranian conflict surrounding the detained British naval personnel: "Either a successful quest for a solution that enables both sides to save face or an escalation in the mutual threats which could trigger the long-feared war against Iran." According to Gottschlich, Russia and Turkey both have the potential to prevent the latter scenario. "The fact that Iran's western neighbour, Turkey, wants to prevent an escalation of the conflict at all costs and has therefore offered to mediate could be helpful. Neither the Russian nor the Turkish governments are currently regarded as enemies by Tehran. They are therefore in a better position than others to make it clear to Ahmadinejad and his backers that only those who are looking for a new excuse for a war would profit from an escalation of the conflict."
