Is Turkey falling prey to an attempt at destabilisation ?

Author Zafer Senocak complains that people in Turkey seem barely aware nowadays that "up to a hundred years ago Muslims, Christians and Jews led a largely peaceful coexistence in Anatolia. (...) Today there is nothing left of this. Intolerance, violence and hate are the predominant sentiments in the Islamic world. This is a tragedy with far-reaching consequences. The Turks - or at least the vast majority of them - would like to move away from this. They want so much to be different from Iran, with its crazy leader, and the Arab countries with their despotic rulers and fanatic masses... In Turkey, nationalism filled the void left by religion long ago. Here and there alliances are forged with the crude remains of a religion which is largely xenophobic and contemptuous of humanity. This is the evil spirit which brings people to commit terrible crimes against those who hold different beliefs. Although the crimes are committed by individual or small radical groups, they are encouraged and backed by a widespread sentiment, the spirit of the pogrom, which is the result of repressed guilt and a moral catastrophe."
