France should open up debate in Europe
The editorialist Dominique Goubert considers that debates within the EU will become more open with France's comeback on the European scene after the presidential election. "Whoever the next Head of State is, she or he will be an open supporter of the pursuit of the European adventure. They certainly won't be a beatific 'Europtimist': ... the two candidates [Ségolène Royal and Nicolas Sarkozy] share a desire to shake up dogmas such as the free market and the independence of the European Central Bank. It won't be easy for them to get other Member States to share their ideas, but this gives us hope for real debates, as much on a European scale as on the scale of French society. This is necessary. The process has evolved in a tacit way for too long ... , with decisions taken within the Union remaining unexplained and unjustified on a national level."
