The verdict in the Djinjdić trial

The verdict in the trial of the assassins of Prime Minister Zoran Djinjdić was passed on Wednesday, 23 May, in Belgrade. All twelve defendants were found guilty. Adelheid Wölfl nonetheless expresses her disappointment: "The judges were unable to determine who was responsible for the paralysis of the democratic revolution and the disappointment of the expectations of thousands... Prime Minister Vojislav Koštunica also refuses to see the political dimensions of this crime, and even Djindjić's own party, the DS, wasn't assertive enough in demanding full clarification. At least the family's lawyers regret that the background details won't come to light. But the political consequences are obvious. Since the assassination the country has strayed from its clear course of Westernisation. Not only is the government taking advantage of all the nationalist rhetoric, but since Djindjić's death open and frank cooperation with the tribunal in The Hague has become impossible."
