Will a Frenchman run the IMF ?

Nikolaus Piper believes Dominique Strauss-Kahn's nomination is a great opportunity for the IMF, because he may be able to push through reforms and maintain credibility in the Third World. Nonetheless, he criticises the selection procedure. "Once again France's diplomats have engineered an unexpected victory for their candidate. This is a welcome victory for President Nicolas Sarkozy but a shameful result for the other Europeans... Yet again, the smaller European states have been ignored. Just imagine if the Europeans had sent Leszek Balcerowicz, the man who guided the Polish economy towards capitalism, to Washington instead. This would have sent a clear message to the industrialising countries that their interests are being taken seriously. However this solution was out of the question - the chaotic course of the Polish government alone quashed that idea."
