Dominique Moïsi, a professor at the College of Europe in Natolin (Warsaw), describes the disparity between the way Poles see themselves and the role of Poland within Europe. "Poland's battle against Germany - and against the EU as a whole - only works to the advantage of a revisionist Russia. If Poland's current leaders want to play the power-balancing games of the nineteenth century again, they must understand where the real power lies in Europe. In demographical and strategic terms Poland is by far the most important new EU member. No one is intentionally trying to insult the Polish people. Only the Poles themselves can damage Poland's reputation and influence, and it has to be said that in recent times they've done an excellent job of this. ... If Poland was plagued by fewer unfounded fears about its future it wouldn't be so obsessed with a past that refuses to be left behind."
