Poland, Europe's disgrace
On Thursday, September 6th, Poland blocked the creation of a 'European day against the death penalty'. The editorialist Jurek Kuczkiewicz denounces "Poland's democratic slippage". "It is impossible to measure the gravity of the slippage with its daily episodes unimaginable in a European democracy, albeit only 17 years old. ... Corrupting the legislative and judicial system and pushing all buttons on the control panel to serve nothing other than electoral purposes is the Kaczynskis' sole programme and makes Berlusconi seem like an alter boy. ... By trampling ultimate values, including Law and Justice, words they stole to adorn their party, the infamous twins have chosen to get closer to models that have little to recommend them within European practice, such as Vladimir Putin's and Hugo Chavez's. Numerous horrified Poles have been overcome by shame for a long time; it is high time that Europeans feel it too."
