Back to the ballot box for the Italians

On February 4th, Franco Marini, president of the Italian senate, gave up on trying to form a transitional government whose mission would have been to revise electoral law. Early elections are thus due to be organised for this April, to the despair of Edmondo Berselli. "So this is ending up as we had feared, despite the persuasive force of our president of the Republic, Giorgio Napolitano, and with the regrets of the President of the Senate along with Walter Veltroni's disillusion regarding this missed opportunity, but to the satisfaction of Berlusconi and the House of Freedoms [right-wing electoral alliance] ... Berlusconi and his allies will do all they can to avoid being labelled as 'breakers', who, out of sheer electoral greed, did not seize the opportunity to modify the political rules. It is perfectly clear that the centre-right has sabotaged, almost unanimously, Franco Marini's attempt ... . "
