Spain must be united against terrorism
During a television debate on February 25th, the Spanish Prime Minister José Luis Zapatero and the leader of the Conservative opposition Mariano Rajoy confronted one another over the question of ETA [Basque separatist organisation]. For the Portuguese editorialist Eduardo Dâmaso, "in Spain, the struggle against terrorism is no longer the point of consensus that it was a few years ago. After a period when Spanish society managed to agree on the subject, along with the political parties among themselves, there remains today a fracture born of the desire [of Zapatero's government] to negotiate with ETA, especially since the attempt has failed. It would be good if the elections [legislatives this March 9th] weren't to end up as just one more episode that demonstrates ETA's capacity to pressure Spanish society, but a phase consolidating an offensive against the terrorists."
