Charges against opposition leaders in Belarus

Ten days after Belarus' rigged presidential elections, the public prosecutor has brought charges against Alexander Kozulin, the imprisoned head of the social democratic opposition party. He stands accused of organising protests. The public prosection has also threatened to bring charges against opposition leader Alexander Milinkevich. Commentator Waclaw Radziwinowicz says he has not given up hope that Alexander Lukashenko's despotic dictatorship will collapse in the long term. "When asked how they're doing nowadays, people in Minsk answer: 'It all depends on the public prosecutor'... As mad and brutal as Lukashenko's treatment of his rivals may be, it shows that the dictator is afraid. He has understood that he can't simply ignore his rivals and that part of his people don't want to live in a Soviet-style dictatorship. Soon, he will probably realise that neither the public prosecutor nor the national security forces nor the lying media can protect him from defeat in his battle against democracy."
