Montenegro's independence
"No-one can live from independence alone," Adelheid Wölfl comments. She argues that the EU must now step in and offer Montenegro a helping hand. "Montenegro, and soon perhaps Kosovo too, are heading for a rude awakening. Their desire for independence will no longer mask the real problems. And the union with Serbia will no longer serve as an excuse for the standstill on reforms and for all kinds of corruption. Once all the rejoicing about achieving independence has come to an end, local politicians will be responsible for boring day-to-day politics. It's here that Brussels must step in. For example, it's vital that following Yugoslavia's disintegration, closer bonds be forged on a pragmatic basis between the successor states. This is particularly important for their economies."
