Benedict XVI in Poland

The Catholic daily devotes its editorial to Benedict XVI's speech on Nazi crimes at the Birkenau concentration camp. "Extremely precise and scrupulous in its analysis and condemnation of the historical facts, but reticent when it came to evoking the responsibility of specific individuals and peoples, especially when tied to long-ago events. Yesterday, the Pope avoided blaming the Germans collectively for what was perpetrated under the empire of a "band of criminals". ... Faithful to his calling as a pedagogue, Benedict XVI raised the question that each one of us poses to himself ...: 'Where was God during this time?' ... During the most horrendous crimes of the 20th century, God remained silent because too many men remained silent. Because too many Christians - including high-level Church authorities - remained silent."
