Government crisis in Lithuania
Karl Grobe says the resignation of the Lithuanian government was "long overdue". "The coalition, built in 2004, was a stopgap measure with a very short expiry date. The political group, carrying the misleading name 'Labour Party', was the creation of a shady businessman called Viktor Uspaskich, and much to everybody's amazement and widespread dismay, it then became the strongest parliamentary party. Owing to his colourful reputation, however, Uspaskich himself was unsuitable to become prime minister... Brazauskas, who as head of the KP had been the driving force behind Lithuania's independence from the Soviet Union and was therefore extremely popular, is the tragic figure in this process, because the sad picture which Vilnius now presents is not his doing... His collaboration with Uspaskich has damaged his reputation."
