Kaczynski cancels meeting with Chirac and Merkel
Citing ill health, Polish President Lech Kaczynski postponed a Weimar Triangle meeting with his French colleague Jacques Chirac and German Chancellor Angela Merkel planned for July 3. The Polish media speculates on whether a satire published by the Berliner tageszeitung annoyed the president and was the real reason for the sudden cancellation. Adam Szostkiewicz, Polityka's deputy head of foreign affairs, sees other reasons: "President Kaczynski won't attend the Weimar Triangle meeting and Prime Minister Kazimierz Marcinkiewicz won't stand in for him because Chancellor Merkel and President Chirac want to talk to Lech Kaczynski personally about the gas pipeline. And that's hardly surprising considering that Poland protested very vocally against a European energy policy. So now what? Do we have any kind of foreign policy at all now or is it mainly based on omissions ?"
