Brussels' silence on Slovakia
Andras Szigetvari finds it hard to believe that up to now the European Social Democrats are the only ones to have plucked up the courage to criticise Slovakia's new populist government. "The case of Slovakia disproves the theory that only the 'small ones' get a 'real roasting' from Brussels. This time Brussels is just as silent as it was when Silvio Berlusconi formed a coalition government with the Lega Nord in 2001 and when two right-wing parties joined the Polish government in May 2006… The EU's failure to adopt a clear stance on the issue is disappointing for the EU itself. After all, it's the European Union that demands 'compliance with European standards' in its accession talks with Turkey. The Slovakian example shows that nobody seems to know what those standards are. These standards are referred to only when it's about countries outside the EU club."
