Poland - a family business

"Poland is henceforth a family affair," Pol Mathil writes in an editorial. "What we see here is both a dramatic turn of events and a palace coup. Nothing explains why it was necessary to sack a prime minister who enjoys a 70 % approval rating in order to replace him with Jaroslaw Kaczynski, a forceful man who takes easy offense and who, as president of the PiS, governs the country behind the scenes. Nothing, except a settling of scores within the ruling team. Mr. Marcinkiewicz was most likely a victim of his own outsized popularity. ... Jaroslaw Kaczynski decided he would no longer allow anyone to rise above him. Especially the deposed prime minister who, his popularity notwithstanding, had no real power within a party utterly beholden to the Kaczynski brothers, and who had begun formulating independent ideas and acting with greater autonomy."
