Russia in the run-up to the G8 summit

Klaus-Helge Donath portrays former world chess champion Gari Kasparov, who now sees himself as an oppositional politician and is currently organising a counter-summit to the G8 summit under the slogan "The other Russia" in a Moscow hotel. The Kremlin is very annoyed. "Kasparov is making a serious accusation against G8 heads of government: he accuses the West of doing nothing to stop the erosion of democracy in Russia because it wants to protect its security and energy interests... Kasparov pronounces harsh judgement on the state of his country, saying it is in the early stages of 'fascism', and refusing to compromise with the Kremlin elite... Up to now they have left him alone; he's being allowed to get away with more than other opposition figures. But the press – always loyal to the Kremlin – has already branded him a genius on the brink of madness, a robot that only functions properly when playing chess."
