Dialogue needed to break Mideast impasse

"The Middle East crisis witnessed an especially dangerous escalation overnight Wednesday to Thursday," notes Peter Vandermeersch, the conservative daily's editorialist. "We have not seen Israeli air strikes of this kind over Lebanon for a quarter of a century. The military response of the Jewish state constitutes a totally disproportionate act of war. However, many people seem to forget, especially in Europe, that Israel's enemies are not brave freedom fighters. Hamas and Hizbollah are deeply entrenched terrorist organisations, supported by Syria and, especially, Iran. The latter, whose president makes no secret of his desire to wipe Israel off the map, is attempting to develop a nuclear weapons program. Tehran finances and organises terror across a large part of the Middle East. Where does the solution to this crisis lie ? In diplomacy."
