Tariq Ramadan proposes another debate concerning the Pope
Tariq Ramdan, Islam specialist, considers that commentators are missing the point raised by the Pope with his Regensburg speech. "This is about a very European Pope calling the different populations of the continent to take into account of the central and incontrovertible character of Christianity if they don't want to loose their identity. This message may be legitimate in these times of identity crisis, but it is above all disturbing and potentially dangerous because it is operating a double simplification in its historical approach and in the definition of European identity. It is to this that Muslims should respond, first of all by contesting this reading of the history of European thinking which accords no role to Muslim rationalism. ... Neither Europe nor the West will be able to survive if it insists on defining itself exclusively and at a distance from others - Islam or Muslims- who are feared."
