Nationalism jeopardises economy
According to its critics, Hungary's new constitution undermines the rights of the constitutional court and restricts the independence of the press and the judiciary. The liberal-conservative daily Adevărul hopes that the EU will now crank up the pressure on the country: "The current situation in Hungary is a challenge for all Europe. The European Commission has so far shied away from a conflict with Hungary. In the first half of 2011 Hungary held the EU rotating presidency, but Brussels was too preoccupied with the euro crisis. Will the Commission now rouse itself from its lethargy? ... Viktor Orbán, rightly described in the 1990s as Central Europe's liberal rising star, has now landed in a mire of conservative nationalism - with right-wing extremist overtones. ... Everything is now subject to his will: the parliamentary majority as well as the state institutions. Except for financial stability, about which he cares little. After all it's written in the new constitution: God loves the Hungarians. ... But the stronger the nationalist voices become the more the economic situation in Hungary will deteriorate."
