Europe has a currency but no soul

A spokesperson has announced that the EU Commission plans to deliberate in the coming days on what measures to take in reaction to violations of EU law on the part of Hungary's right-wing conservative government. But Europe is clearly only in a position to punish debt sinners, scoffs the liberal-conservative daily Corriere della Sera: "If there were a Maastricht for democracy, Europe would immediately call on Hungary to observe a minimum of freedom and democracy. ... Because aside from budget deficits there are also democratic deficits. ... If the EU were not such a cold, elitist construction, we would witness the magnificent scene of a press conference with Sarkozy and Merkel in which Europe declared its solidarity with the Hungarian people in the fight against Prime Minister Viktor Orbán's autocratic rule. ... But with its weak - even indifferent - reaction, Europe has once more demonstrated its insignificance as a united, political entity with which the people have no means of identifying. Apart from the common currency, we simply don't consider Europe our home. Europe was born with a currency, but no soul."
