Shipwreck captain hurts Italy's image

Francesco Schettino, the captain of the capsized cruise ship Costa Concordia, is being blamed for the accident that has so far claimed seven lives. Schettino has damaged Italy's reputation with his unprofessional conduct, the liberal daily Sme writes: "A captain is the last person to abandon a sinking ship. This moral dictate applies all over the world. But the way things look now that wasn't the only rule Schettino ignored. ... The image of a captain acting irresponsibly has damaged the reputation of Italy as a whole. The reputation of a country that has been led to the brink of bankruptcy by people with the same mentality as the captain - a fact with which the rest of Europe must now contend. The captain could have done nothing worse to his country and its tourism sector at the present moment."
