Energetic new President of EU Parliament
The German Social Democrat Martin Schulz was elected as new President of the European Parliament on Tuesday. Among other things he wants to make EU decisions more transparent so as to counteract anti-European resentment. The conservative daily Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung hopes the fiery speaker will bring new impetus to the Parliament: "With the German Social Democrat, the Commission and the heads of state and government of the member countries will not have a parliamentary representative who meekly acquiesces to protocol and doesn't make waves. Schulz will do all he can to prevent the Parliament from bringing up the rear end of the EU parade. He will get his word in and seek conflict wherever and whenever it helps Parliament. ... Perhaps that will help lead the Parliament out of the strange, dissatisfying situation in which it now finds itself: with every treaty reform its influence and role in the legislative process have grown. So at least objectively it has more power."
