Feridun Zaimoglu's "Black Virgins"
Peter Laudenbach comments on the first performance of the play "Black Virgins" in Berlin. The play is based on a series of interviews which Turkish-German author Feridun Zaimoglu conducted with "devout neo-Muslim women" in Germany. "In addition to a hedonistic fundamentalist whose hate for modern Western culture is actually the product of that same modern culture, we meet a Bosnian woman who dreams of the jihad and of finding a great love at the same time, a German woman who seems deeply disturbed, and a paraplegic who despises herself because she's not a 'fully functioning person'. She quarrels with Allah because she sometimes has oral sex with her nurse. The most unsettling figure, for multicultural fans and German nationalists alike, is probably the intellectual woman who worships Osama bin Laden as the 'hero of the century'. She studies law in the hope that she will be able to serve the cause of the holy war in Europe with the knowledge she acquires."
