The election of Veltroni in Italy tackles 'antipolitics'
On October 14th, the mayor of Rome, Walter Veltroni was triumphantly elected as head of the new Democratic Party (PD). Three million voters went out of their way, which "obliges the antipolitical movement [a populist movement characterised by negative discourse against poilitics] to be put into perspective" according to Federico Geremicca. "To these 3 million voters can be added the 5 million people who participated in the referendum on the pension scheme and social security [last week], and the half million people who demonstrated, on Saturday October 13th, beneath National Alliance banners [urged by the right-wing party, they called for greater security and less taxes.] All made a strong signal against antipolitics which was beginning to reach as far as our former ministers and leaders. ... Despite the scandals and excessive spending, government plethora ..., there does actually exist a 'political Italy' that is not ready to resign itself to things as they are."
