The Italian right after Berlusconi
Editorial writer Claudio Rinaldi argues that we are witnessing the end of the Silvio Berlusconi era, and that some of his allies will finally be able to emerge from the shadow of 'Il Cavaliere'. "Once upon a time there were two ambitious leaders called Pier Ferdinando Casini [centrist Christian Democratic Union] and Gianfranco Fini [National Alliance] ... The legislative session barely over, they have ventured a few small gestures of autonomy. Very timorously... On their shoulders rests a weighty national responsibility, that of wresting practically half of Italy's voters from the autocrat's domination. ... For them it is a matter of offering moderate Italians a more dignified future. The restoration of a proper confrontation with the centre-left might be a good start. On the condition that Prodi and his allies do not commit the fatal mistake of being too fussy, in assuming that Berlusconi is the only one capable of being taken seriously on the right."
