The individualised society of Roskilde

The Roskilde Music Festival, which is expected to attract 100,000 visitors by Sunday, was once a symbol of the 1970s youth freedom movement. "Since then, the Roskilde Festival has left behind its hippie days and developed into one of Denmark's most prominent cultural institutions," the newspaper notes. "Every now and then, well-meaning, idealistic, politically correct slogans turn up, but in general the festival's agenda has changed completely. People come to hear music and have fun – in that order. In reality, Roskilde epitomizes the way of thinking of the modern individualist society. Six years ago, eight young people died in a terrible accident. Back then many thought this was the beginning of the end for the festival. But instead it has strengthened its position and is heading towards a higher plane on which the present, the past, the individual and society all meld as one."
