For days now the mood in Latvia has been tense. The government under Prime Minister Aigars Kalvitis has been accused of corruption. Last weekend thousands of citizens gathered in the capital, Riga, to demonstrate and demand the resignation of the government. Baiba Lulle warns of the dangers of letting the people have their way. "We have witnessed in Ukraine and Georgia what happens when power is transferred to revolutionaries to the loud cheers of the people. To describe the popular masses' demands for the dissolution of parliament as populist is to play down the dangers. Given the present circumstances, this would be a perilous adventure from which nothing good can come. .... It's pretty clear what the people are demonstrating against, but is there really any consensus as to what they want?"
