Romanian President Traian Basescu and Prime Minister Calin Tariceanu are fighting over who should head the Ministry of Justice. Now, Basescu has published the pre-1989 personal files of the candidate proposed by the governing liberal party - Norica Nicolai. Sabina Fati comments: "The Liberals initiated a lustration law in Parliament, to open up the past to scrutiny, and the party was the most relentless proponent of expunging all those who had collaborated in any way with the Communist system. Only later did Traian Basescu and the Democratic Party adopt this position, which now – almost two decades after the end of dictatorship – has no practical use and can do harm. Shining the light on the justice ministry at this point could lead to a blockage of the entire system. Since the lustration was not undertaken punctually, the files created by the old regime remain useful for gaining political leverage or blackmailing influential people."
