Her Republican rival, Donald Trump, has so disgraced and discredited himself that it would be inconceivable that he might triumph. Up to now there were still millions of Americans who felt Trump was a breath of fresh air in US politics and the only major political figure who understood their needs, their concerns, and their sense of alienation. His anti-Muslim pronouncements and his threat to build a wall along the Mexican border horrified Republican grandees but it played into the fears and prejudices of middle America. Now, though, it looks like he has finally gone too far.
There are few things that are off limits in American political discourse, but members of the military who died in the service of their country is one of them. Trump did the unthinkable by escalating a feud with the parents of decorated soldier, Captain Humayun Khan, a Muslim.
He also exhibited a disturbing ignorance by declaring that Russian president Vladimir Putin would not make a military incursion into Ukraine, even though Putin already did that by seizing the Crimean peninsula in 2014.
He has also shown how unhinged he is by describing Hillary Clinton as the devil and saying that the election is rigged.
For all our sakes, let us hope Mrs Clinton doesn’t lose.
