Pedro Cuartango on Spain's divided society

Spanish society is split in two, laments the deputy editor of the conservative daily El Mundo, noting that this division is unfortunately reflected in almost all areas of life: "The Spain of the Socialists and that of the People's Party. Rajoy's Spain and Rubalcaba's Spain. The Red and the Blue Spain. The republican and the nationalist. The clerical and the anti-clerical. The Catholic and the atheist. That which goes to mass and that which hates priests. The monarchists and the anti-monarchists. The Spain of the right-wing press and that of the left-wing press. The Spain of [the staunch Franco supporter Manuel] Fraga and that of the [staunch communist Santiago] Carrillo. That of [Real Madrid striker] Ronaldo and that of [Barça star] Messi. … The proponents and the opponents of the labour market reform. Some take to the streets; others stay at home. The Spain of the government and that of the trade unions. Those who want to spend less and those who want to spend more. Those who love Merkel and those who hate her. … The early risers and the night owls. Those who wear uniforms and those who don't iron their shirts. Those who glorify Garzón and those who think he's an idiot. … And how it hurts, this eternally divided Spain."

The Spanish Civil Guard suspected of torture

A Spanish court opened an inquiry on January 7th to determine whether Igor Portu, a presumed member of ETA (Basque separatist organisation) was maltreated at the weekend while under arrest. Doctors have diagnosed a fractured rib and a punctured lung. "There are serious indications of torture and this despite the Civil Guard's claims that the man harmed himself while trying to escape", explains Pedro G. Cuartango. "We thought this practice had been eradicated from Spain a long time ago, but in view of the doubts triggered by this event, the only possible option is to order a real inquest to elucidate the situation. Torture is absolutely intolerable and unacceptable, no matter the circumstances. Nothing can justify pain or emotional torment, not even the worst criminals".

Bernard-Henri Levy sees Europe as a remedy

In a dual interview conducted by Pedro Garcia Cuartango, the French philosopher Bernard-Henri Levy discusses the importance of Europe with the Spanish thinker Fernando Savater. "The difference between France and Spain is due to the fact that the two states were not formed in the same manner. In France there is something known as Jacobinism ... . This is a tragedy that plagues French politics. Europe is the remedy for Jacobinism. And in Spain, Europe is also a real remedy for terrorism, fundamentalism, multinationals, ETA and violence. But not the lazy Europe we know today, not the 'why not' Europe, the Europe of markets and the euro. I am referring to the Europe of the people, of civilisations, of rights and laws, anti-terrorism and the enlightenment. That optimistic Europe we lived in during the 1950s and that is now at the point of dying."
